چکیده

The electrical sources in the brain not only produce an electric potential on the scalp, but also a magnetic field over the head (Cohen 1972). A recording of the potential is the well-known electroencephalogram (EEG), while a recording of the magnetic field is relatively new and is called the magnetoencephalogram (MEG). Although the MEG and EEG are produced by the same sources, an MEG map over the head shows a different spatial pattern than does an EEG map. These differences in the pattern may be useful, since they may allow the MEG to provide new information about the sources. Mostly for this reason, an increasing number of MEGs are being recorded (reviewed by Reite and Zimmerman 1978, and by Williamson and Kanfman 1981). Some of these recordings do suggest pattern differences which are useful; for example, they suggest that the MEG can better localize a source. However, these data are not conclusive. Theoretical studies have also been made which address these differences (Cuffin and Cohen 1979; Romani et al. 1982a). These studies, too, indicate useful differences. They predict pattern differences which, if true in actual recordings, would allow the MEG to better localize and differentiate the neural sources, in some ways, than does the EEG. The purpose of this work is to perform a test and see if these predicted differences can be experimentally demonstrated. Demonstration is needed because the theoretical studies are based on spherical models of the head, and it is not

Clinical MEG : Cerebrovascular diseases 2 - 7 - 14 : MEG database for development of dementia diagnostic protocols : data collection and application

OBJECTIVE: Many studies of dementia mainly Alzheimer's disease (AD) by using MEG have been reported. Some results show there are some differences between patients and controls in MEG data. But it is still difficult to diagnose the disease in early stage using their methods because of large individual variation. We measured many patients and normal aged subjects, and extracted various parameters...

Neural activities during Wisconsin Card Sorting Test--MEG observation.

The present study recorded activities of magnetoencephalography (MEG) to the presentation of cards, and to the presentation of feedback signals in 12 normal subjects while they performed the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), to observe temporal and spatial processing during the task. The MEG responses were compared between two different conditions in the presentation both of cards and of feed...

Functional magnetic resonance imaging blood oxygenation level-dependent signal and magnetoencephalography evoked responses yield different neural functionality in reading.

It is often implicitly assumed that the neural activation patterns revealed by hemodynamic methods, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and electrophysiological methods, such as magnetoencephalography (MEG) and electroencephalography (EEG), are comparable. In early sensory processing that seems to be the case, but the assumption may not be correct in high-level cognitive tasks...

Differences in MEG gamma oscillatory power during performance of a prosaccade task in adolescents with FASD

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is characterized by a broad range of behavioral and cognitive deficits that impact the long-term quality of life for affected individuals. However, the underlying changes in brain structure and function associated with these cognitive impairments are not well-understood. Previous studies identified deficits in behavioral performance of prosaccade tasks in ...

Characteristics of MEG Removal from Industrial Wastewater by Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR)

Background: MEG is extensively applied in the sour gas industry as a hydrate inhibitor. It is toxic in oral drinking and serious injury or death may result from swallowing of pure ethylene glycol and poses a potential hazard to the environment through impact soil. Glycols are harmful to aquatic life. There is little information about the digestion of MEG in the aerobic reactor. Therefore, t...
